Mountains of Gold (Woods Point P.O.)

Deep within the mountains of the Great Dividing Range.

Mountains of Gold must be one of the most remotely situated stores in Victoria. To reach Woods Point requires around of 1.5 hours driving on gravel mountain roads from the nearest town, Jamieson.

Once at Woods Point, the scene is one of a quiet, not quite abandoned, gold mining village, tucked away on the infant headwaters of the Goulburn River.

Ask at the store for a 'mud map' showing the town's walking trails.

The town's historic service station is one of the tiniest still operative in Victoria, if not Australia.

Believe it or not -- the small creek at bottom left is actually the Goulburn River. This is a view of Johnson Hill Track looking towards Gooleys Creek. (Part of McMillan's Walking Track to Omeo -- Allow 2 weeks). Photo taken 1980s.

An easier walking track follows the river to the town's Cottage Garden.(Note: This photo was taken in 2003. In more recent times the large willow trees lining the river have been removed.
Travel Tip

Follow the short, slightly steep track to Dusty's Lookout for a great view across Woods Point township and towards Johnsons Hill.

Once there you can sit quietly beneath an old tree, enjoy the scenery, and forget about the worries of the World.

Even on a hot day, there can be a pleasant cool breeze at Dusty's Lookout.
