GUY'S WONNANGATTA CARAVAN PARK

On the Wonnangatta River at Waterford

The Wonnangatta Caravan Park is situated at Waterford not far from where this picture was taken. The Caravan Park on river frontage land also has fuel, a kiosk and mechanical repairs. Maps of the local area are available. The Guy family who operate the caravan park have a long association with the district dating back to the 1860s gold rush era. Ask them about the family's involvement at the old township of Talbotville, at Waterford and at Wonnangatta Station. They will surely be able to point out some fascinating places to visit.

The Wonnangatta River rises on the Great Dividing Range before passing through the famous Wonnangatta Station. The old station, now public land, can be reached by 4WD, a half day journey (one way) from Waterford.
Downstream from Waterford, the Wonnangatta River and the Dargo River unite to form the Mitchell River. The junction can be reached by gravel road from Dargo township via Lower Dargo Road. The Dargo River is the lighter coloured water coming into the Wonnangatta from the right.

Travel Tip

You don't have to be a four-wheel driver to enjoy the Wonnangatta Valley. Crooked River Road is a reasonably good gravel road leading from the main Bairnsdale - Dargo Road near Guy's Caravan Park, for 44 km up the Wonnangatta Valley to the magnificent and historic 'Eaglevale'. It is one of the most scenic drives you are likely to encounter in the Victorian Alps. Around virtually every corner will be a different scenic surprise. The road is very narrow in places making driving slow but exciting. Book a site at the caravan park, make sure you pack a picnic lunch and a camera, and explore all the hidden delights of the Lower Wonnangatta River Valley. At about 23 km from the Dargo Road, you will see a bridge across the river. Cross the bridge and follow Wonnangatta Road to Eaglevale. The continuation of Crooked River Road soon becomes 4WD at a deep river ford.
