WILCANNIA

Old River Port on the Darling River

Wilcannia Roadhouse (ph; 08 8091 5957) is situated in the heart of the Western NSW town of Wilcannia. It is the only roadhouse in this town on the Barrier Highway between Cobar and Broken Hill. The roadhouse offers diesel, petrol, LPG, post office facilities and refreshments. Enquire there for accommodation at Grahams Motel.

They also stock a range of touring maps for NSW and Outback NSW and will take orders for items not in stock.

Wilcannia was once an important port on the Darling River where wool barges and other trading vessels would make regular stops. Many fine old sandstone buildings date back to the river boat days. Descriptive plaques beside some of the more historic buildings tell more of the Wilcannia story. Take a walk around town to explore its history.

The Darling River is part of Australia's greatest river system. This view show's the river at peak flow. There is a good picnic area beside the river in Wilcannia.

Some tourists now do the 'Darling River Run' by following the river road on one side of the Darling between Wentworth and Bourke and returning along the road on the opposite side. Wilcannia is situated about half way.

Wilcannia is also a good base from which to explore nearby National Parks and enjoy fishing, hunting and camping along the Darling
