WENTWORTH

Old port at the junction of Australia's two greatest rivers

The Wentworth Visitor Information Centre has lots of information on things to see and do and places to stay and eat in and around the historic town of Wentworth.

They also have a good range of local maps and books including topographic maps, touring maps and history books.

The town is situated at the junction of Australia's two longest rivers. At Junction Park the Murray River, which has its source in Australia's Alpine Region and the Darling, which has its origins in Southern Queensland, unite two form one mighty stream.

There is a viewing platform in the park and amenities to create a pleasant picnic venue.

Wentworth was once a busy port servicing the needs of paddle steamers and their barges. Both rivers were for many years main transport routes to remote pastoral stations. They would deliver provisions and collect produce such as wool.

Today the town is still busy with recreational boats and restored (or new) paddle steamers now used for river cruises. This is the 'Coonawarra' moored on the Darling River at the old port.

There is more to see at Wentworth than just the rivers. A few kilometres out of town towards Renmark are the Perry Sandhills. These moving sandhills slowly consume anything in its way. The tree in the centre of the photograph has several metres of sand built up around its stem as it struggles to stay above the sand line.

Vehicles are not permitted on the sand hills but walkers are welcome. It is a great family spot where the children can run, climb and play among the dunes.

About 64 kilometres from Wentworth, along the Old Wentworth to Renmark Road is Lake Victoria. The lake is a declared Aboriginal Cultural site following the discovery of ancient bones and implements in the lake bed and around the sandy fringes.

There is a small viewing are on the embankment at Rufus River where visitors are permitted to view and photograph the lake, otherwise all access is prohibited unless authorised by the controlling authority.
