WILSON'S PROMONTORY
Jewell of South
Gippsland |
|
Wilsons Promontory was Victoria's first National
Park. From fairly humble beginnings in the early 1900s it has grown to
become one of Victoria's most popular tourist destinations.
The main information centre, a store,
accommodation and a large camping area are situated at Tidal River.
The Tidal River General Store has groceries, supplies, hot food, drinks, camping gear and
good maps for exploring the National Park.
For more information on bushwalking, overnight
hiking, camping, boating and fishing around Wilson's Promontory, contact
Parks Victoria on 131963.. |

Todal River
Camping area is situated beside Norman Bay and it's beautiful beach. |

Because of
the size of the National Park, it is still easy to find a perfect 'away from
the crowds' spot like Cotter's Beach, only a 1km walk from a car park. Walk
along the beach for a short distance and you will begin to wonder where all
the people are.
This view
from Cotter's Beach is of Black Rock with Shellback Island in the distance.

Refuge Cove
is a picturesque spot on the Sealer's Cove, Waterloo Bay circuit. Allow at
least two or three days of overnight hiking to visit some of The Prom's best
beaches.
The white
object in the water is a yacht taking advantage of the safe harbour for an
rest stop. |
|
Oberon Bay
is in stark contrast to the quiet waters of refuge Cove (above). Here the
rolling surf continually pounds the white sandy beach. |

Travel Tip |
|

|
Wilson's Promontory is teeming with wildlife,
none better than this fine specimen with a huge and powerful tail, spotted
at Darby River car park. The flats around Darby River attract a wide variety
of native Australian fauna. They can easily be seen along the main
Promontory Tourist Road between Yanakie and Tidal River, so have your camera
ready and drive cautiously. |
