Orbost Visitor Information Centre

The Orbost Visitor Information Centre is situated in The Slab Hut at the corner of Nicholson and Clark Streets in Orbost.

The Slab Hut is an icon of Orbost. It was originally built in 1872 and shifted in recent times from it's original location near the junction of the Snowy and Buchan Rivers near Buchan, north-west of Orbost.

The Slab Hut is now home to a collection of Orbost and District historic memorabilia and is open to the public almost every day of the year.

Just a short walk from The Slab Hut is Orbost's beautiful Forest Park close to the banks of the Snowy River. Take an opportunity to join these locals for refreshments and a picnic lunch on the park's well-maintained lawns.

Beside the Princes Highway on the western approach to Orbost is an immensely long trestle bridge. The bridge once carried the Bairnsdale to Orbost railway line; however, the railway closed many years ago leaving the bridges to deteriorate on the green river flats.

January 2006 saw the completion of the final stage of the line as a linear recreation rail trail from Bairnsdale to Orbost. Walkers, horse-riders and cyclists will then be able to follow the 100km long trail between those towns.

Travel Tip

Orbost is convenient to some of the wonderful beaches of the Wilderness Coast including this one at Cape Conran, south-east of the town. A very nice coastal drive is possible from Orbost via the Snowy River mouth at Marlo to Cape Conran.

Ask at the Visitor Information Centre for further details of the tourist drive and the Hema map of East Gippsland to explore other great places.
