Omeo Visitor Information Centre

Omeo Country Colours

The Omeo Visitor Information Centre is situated in the Omeo Community House opposite the Foodworks Supermarket.

They have a special room devoted to tourism and tourist information with lots of brochures and local maps suitable for touring, four-wheel driving, fishing and hiking.

The township is situated very close to the top of the Great Dividing Range. It is surrounded by rolling green hills and timbered mountain slopes.

The main way in and out of the town is via the Great Alpine Road to either Bairnsdale or Wangaratta (via Bright). Omeo is conveniently situated about midway, making it a good overnight destination and thus making The Great Alpine Road a relaxing two day drive.

Omeo is a cattleman's town, with a rich heritage of pastoral pioneers and gold miners who followed. The district was one of the earliest settled districts in Victoria with graziers coming overland from New South Wales.

This picture is 'The Dog's Grave' situated in a small reserve high up in the mountains of the Great Dividing Range, off Birregun Road between Omeo and Dargo.

It shows a maintained grave in the foreground (believed to date back to the 1860s), a memorial to a drover's dog and a plaque containing the words of a poem penned by a local Dargo cattleman in the 1960s.

Travel Tip

No. 1 -- When travelling between Omeo and Swifts Creek, try the back road through the valley of Cassilis and Tongio West, former gold mining towns. This is a very scenic drive with some interesting places to explore along the way. The road was once part gravel; however, in recent years sealing was completed to enable a comfortable diversion for any class of car.

No. 2 -- Kennedy's Hut can be found near Taylor's Crossing, about 45 minutes drive north of Omeo. It is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Mitta Mitta River. Drive through Benambra onto the Corryong Road. Follow this road beyond Benambra for about 10 kilometres to a 'Y' Junction with Tablelands Road. Turn left onto the gravel road to Taylor's Crossing (about 10 kilometres from the sealed road turnoff). Park vehicle at the swing bridge at Taylor's Crossing. Walk across the swing bridge and follow the vehicle track downstream. Watch out for another vehicle track on your right (first track on your right; a little under 1km from the bridge) and follow it for about 500 metres to the hut. It is about 1.5 kilometres flat and easy walking each way. Take some refreshments to enjoy at the hut.

If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, and the river is at a low level, there is no need to walk to the hut as there is a vehicle ford at the swing bridge. Don't risk driving the ford unless the river is very low.

A copy of the Benambra/Leinster topographic map, available from the Visitor Centre, would be useful for this trip.
