Octagon Bookshop, Omeo Don't Miss This Great Little Bookshop |
|
|
|
Omeo
is a picturesque and quiet town situated among rolling farmland at the
foot of the Victorian High Country.
Octagon Bookshop at the corner of Day Avenue and the Great Alpine Road has a terrific variety of books on the High Country, plus Gippsland history and environmental titles. They also have a good range of maps to choose from. |
2 kilometres from the centre of Omeo, beside the Great Alpine Road towards Dinner Plain, is the Oriental Claims Historic Area. This area was heavily mined by Chinese miners during the 19th century, using hydraulic water pressure. Large eroded cliff faces and alluvial diggings within the reserve can be explored by walking tracks. |

There
are numerous old gold mining areas within close proximity to Omeo. This
picture is of the cemetery at Glen Wills, a former gold and tin mining
township which existed as a town from about 1889 until about 1959.
To visit Glen Wills, Take the Omeo Highway from Omeo towards Mitta Mitta and Tallangatta. Before you do, call in to the Octagon Bookshop and purchase a copy of 'Ghost Towns of the High Country' which describes many more of these interesting places to visit near Omeo. |
