Noojee

in the West Gippsland Hills

Noojee is a small timber town situated at the foot of the Great Dividing Range. During weekends and public holidays the town comes alive with bushwalkers, motor cyclists, four-wheel drivers, fishermen, day-trippers and campers who all come to enjoy the natural scenery and historic sites around the town.

Right in the heart of Noojee is the Red Parrot Cafe where you can sit down and enjoy a meal or a cuppa, and purchase a map.

Noojee is fortunate in having several rivers close by. The most stunning of the streams is undoubtedly the Toorongo River. A short drive through the Toorongo Valley to the Toorongo and Amphitheatre Falls should be on the 'must do' list for visitors to Noojee. The Toorongo Valley is about 3 kilometres out of Noojee Township off the Mount Baw Baw Tourist Road.

The Toorongo Falls can be reached from a car park at the end of Toorongo Valley Road. It is about 1 kilometre by walking track to the foot of the falls. Thw walking track continues as a short circuit trail back to the car park via Amphitheatre Falls.

Another 'must see' destination close to Noojee is the old Noojee Trestle Bridge. This bridge once supported trains using the Warragul to Noojee railway; however, the railway closed long ago. All that remains to evidence those days is this bridge and the Noojee Rail Trail, a 2 kilometre walking track from Noojee Township to the bridge.

By car, the trestle bridge access road is signposted about 2 kilometres from the township along the main road to Drouin and Warragul.

Camping is just one of the many ways for visitors to enjoy themselves at Noojee. This is camping area at Toorongo Falls. Other camping areas are situated in Noojee township and in the Loch Valley.

Travel Tip

One of the more adventurous destinations from Noojee is the giant Ada Tree. The roads are rough and dusty (or slippery in wet), but the effort of the drive and a 2 kilometre walk will be worthwhile. The Ada Tree can be located off either McCarthy Spur Road from Noojee township, or via New Turkey Spur, off the Yarra Junction Road. The access roads to the Ada Tree should be clearly signposted; however, if they are not look for the turnoff at about 16 kilometres along McCarthy Spur Road or at about 16.5 kilometres along New Turkey Spur Road.
