LICOLA

Gateway to Wonnangatta & Moroka

Licola is a small village convenient to many of the Victorian High Country's main attractions. The only store in town is the Licola General Store where you can purchase food, drinks, petrol and a good map to help you find all the best places around Licola. There store also has a good caravan park with frontage to the Macalister River. Barring recent fire or flood, all the destinations pictured below are accessible by conventional car along gravel roads (outside of the snow season, unless).

By staying a while at or around Licola, you will soon learn more about the history and legends of the cattlemen of the high plains. One of their legacy's to today's mountain travellers is the many old accommodation huts these cattlemen once used during mustering times. The huts have become a major attraction of the high country. This one is Howitt Hut, easily visited off Howitt Road.
The Pinnacles Fire Hut is situated at the end of Pinnacles Road, off Moroka Road. It will take about 1.5 hours of driving on fairly good standard gravel roads to visit this lookout, but the effort will be rewarded with some of the best views in the Victorian Alps.

This view from The Pinnacles is of the Wonnangatta Valley. From the Pinnacles a very steep 4WD track known as 'Billy Goat Bluff Track' plummets down to the valley below. It is recommended that drivers who follow Billy Goat Bluff Track be experienced four-wheel drivers and have a car in sound mechanical condition. Although the track is only 7 kilometres long it descends about 1000 vertical metres over that distance.
Moroka Falls and Gorge is another great place to visit near Licola. The car park is located at Horseyard Flat off Moroka Road on the way to The Pinnacles. From the car park, it is a return walk of about 6 kilometres to the falls.

Travel Tip

Anyone in virtually any vehicle can enjoy some of the spectacular scenery of Licola. The main road from Heyfield to Licola is sealed the entire distance. While it has some winding sections, the road is generally of good standard and a comfortable trip among some great mountain scenery can be enjoyed along this road. The distance from Heyfield to Licola is about 56 kilometres. Allow more than an hour for the trip. Once you are at Licola, you can still follow the bitumen for another 23 kilometres along Tamboritha Road through the Wellington River valley. This is also worthwhile for the scenery. If you are into camping. Take a tent and stay a night or longer. There are many campsites along the river valley and one should be available at all times except perhaps during long weekends and major holidays. Alternatively there may be a n onsite van available at the caravan park. Obtain a copy of the Rooftop map 'Jamieson / Licola' and/or 'Dargo / Wonnangatta' from the general store and enjoy your stay.
