HEYFIELD

Gateway to the Mountains & Rivers of Gippsland

Heyfield is a small country town situated on the Thomson River in Central Gippsland. The town is also situated at the foot of the Australian Alps and attracts traffic heading from Gippsland to places such as Licola, Jamieson, dargo and Walhalla. Most four-wheel drivers and tourists head for the Timberline General Store at the junction of the Licola and Maffra Roads to obtain fuel, supplies and maps for the alpine regions.
Close to Heyfield is Glenmaggie Weir.

One week before this photograph was taken, the weir was virtually dry. A huge downpour in 2007 filled the lake within 24 hours.

The flood came down the Macalister River from the mountains around Licola. With it came ash from the 2006 / 2007 bushfires as the lake filled with water that was almost black.

The flood caused massive damage to bridges in the district. This bridge across the Macalister River had still not been repaired 5 months later.

The Avon River flows out of a wilderness area into the Gippsland Plains before eventually emtying out into the Gippsland Lakes system.

A stretch of the river north-east of Heyfield is makes an interesting destination, particularly for walkers following the Avon River Walking Track.

Four-wheel drivers heading top places like this in the Victorian High Country frequently pass through Heyfield.

This is Dimmicks Lookout, off the Howitt Road, north-east of Licola.

Kelly's Hut, an original old cattlemen's hut is another popular destination near Licola, via Heyfield.

For more information on High Country Huts around Licola, look for a copy of Rooftop's 'Bush Huts around Licola' map which should be available at the Timberline General Store in Heyfield.

Travel Tip

Looking for an interesting destination, not too far from Melbourne of the Latrobe Valley?

Try 'The Channels' on the Avon River near Heyfield where the river forms a narrow channel through the rocky surrounds. To find your way there, obtain a copy of Rooftop's 'Dargo-Wonnangatta Adventure Map' from the Timberline General Store.

Approaching sunset on a sunny day, the water in the channels turns to a magnificent amber colour.
