SHEAR OUTBACK, HAY

The Shearers' Hall of Fame.

Shear Outback is the Australian Shearer's Hall of Fame. Visit an authentic Shearer's museum and learn about legends of the shearing trade.

Then have a cuppa or lunch in the gift shop's restaurant. A good range of tourist books and maps are also on display.

Ruins of the One Tree Hotel beside Cobb Highway north of Hay.

The old hotel once catered to the needs of horse-drawn transport. By the 1940s it was struggling to exist and closed its doors about that time.

Maude Weir is another good place to visit near Hay. The village of Maude is accessible by a good sealed road from Hay. You can complete a round trip from Maude returning to Hay via the Sturt Highway.

The banks of Maude Weir on the Murrumbidgee River make a good camping destination and, if you feel like it, you might even catch a fish.

Travel Tip

There are many beautiful river reserves along the Murrumbidgee River between Darlington Point and Maude. Spend an extra night at Hay, pack a picnic lunch the next morning, and do a circuit tour from Hay to Darlington Point following the river on one side and returning along the opposite side. Tracks providing access to the river reserves are marked with small sign posts off the two main roads. Most, if not all of these access tracks are suitable for conventional cars. Overnight camping in many of the reserves is generally permitted (unless signposted otherwise).
