COBAR

Copper & Gold Country on the Kidman Way.

The Great Cobar Heritage Centre is a museum dedicated to the history of Cobar and District.

Call in to learn more about the mining history of the region. The Centre is also a full Tourist Information Centre with a well stocked souvenir and gift shop.

A range of maps and books are available.

Opposite the Heritage Centre is a park with monuments to the mining industry and its pioneers.

This photo is of a recreated mine poppet head at sunset.

This interesting monument made from sundry pieces of 'junk' depicts a miner heading off to work at the Gilgunnia Goldfields.

The monument can be seen at the Gilgunnia Goldfields Rest Area beside the Kidman Way south of Cobar.

Travel Tip 1

If travelling the Kidman Way between Hillston and Cobar, stop at the Gilgunnia Rest Area and take a walk across the road, and through a gate onto the Gilgunnia goldfield where there are still some old diggings and mining relics to explore; however, shafts, wood supports and remnants of wooden whims from the old days (still visible in 2001) have recently been bulldozed and obliterated.

Travel Tip 2

While the earth's riches around Cobar enable that town to flourish, the old mining town of Nymagee, about 96km south-east of Cobar struggles to survive. For the time being, the wealth has run out and the mines have stopped working. This is just one of many former business houses now in ruin.

To visit Nymagee and enjoy a great scenic drive, follow the Barrier Highway towards Nyngan as far as Canbelego, then turn south through the hills to Nymagee. Return via the bitumen and the Kidman Way. One place of business still survives in Nymagee. It is the Nymagee Hotel. While this business remains active, Nymagee can still boast to be the highest town in Western New South Wales at an elevation of about 305 metres above sea level.
