CHILTERN INFORMATION CENTRE (Nanna's Knook) An Historic Gold Town |
Chiltern is an historic gold mining village in Victoria's
north-east. The Chiltern Visitor Information Centre is situated in Nanna's Knook where you will be treated with country hospitality and receive advice on everything and anything to see and do around Chiltern. The information centre has a good range of maps and books to choose from. |
| The first enjoyable task at Chiltern is usually to explore the fascinating old main street with its mix of curiosity shops, coffee shops and restaurants and essential rural services. |
After exploring the main street, go for a walk around the lake and be rewarded with close encounters with the birdlife and some great town views. |
| For those into historic mines and mining areas, there is plenty to see and do in the forests around Chiltern. Ask for details of the forest tour at the information centre. |
If you are a keen birdwatcher, look for some of the old
mining dams situated not far from the township. Because of the permanency of
the water, rare birds can sometimes be seen in and around these dams.
To explore the area in detail, you should look for a copy of the Beechworth - Albury - Wangaratta map by Rooftop Maps, available at the information centre or newsagency. |
