The township of Buchan is situated in the Buchan River valley. That river collects the Murrindal River before joining the Snowy River about 15 kilometres from the township at Balleyhooley Camping area. See picture below. The junction is at the far right of the picture. |
| Apart from the town's major attraction: the fascinating limestone caves; there are many scenic touring options including the road to Gelantipy & Wulgulmerang; Tulloch Ard Forest Drive; The Timbarra Valley and the Buchan to Orbost Road. Call at the General Store for some supplies and a good map before exploring the region. | |

McKillops Bridge is a popular camping, canoeing and four-wheel driving destination on the Snowy River. Follow the Gelantipy Road to Wulgulmerang. Then follow the narrow and winding road to McKillops Bridge. It's a spectacular drive but take extreme caution as there are many blind corners to negotiate. |
|
Having overcome
the hazards of the road to McKillops Bridge, some wonderful
scenery of the Snowy River can be enjoyed. The round trip via Bonang,
Gelantipy, Buchan and Orbost will impress on your memory for a lifetime.
|
McKillops Bridge Road continues past the bridge with spectacular scenery of the Deddick River Valley. The road has a gravel surface but is suitable for most cars if taken carefully.

Travel Tip 1 |
|
| If travelling beyond McKillops Bridge towards Bonang, consider following the Amboyne Settlement Road which leaves McKillops Bridge Road to rejoin that road further along after passing through some great scenery with spectacular mountain views. Ask at Buchan for more precise directions or obtain a copy of the Hema Map 'East Gippsland'. | |
|
Travel Tip 2 |
|
| Stop at Buchan and explore the Buchan Caves Reserve. Even if you haven't got time for a superb Caves guided tour, the gardens and surrounds of the reserve make a pleasant break from driving. | |
