Bright

A town for all seasons.

Bright has all the features you will require of a mountain resort. The town, on the cascading Ovens River, is situated in a beautiful valleys surrounded by some some of Victoria's most spectacular mountains. It is a perfect, year-round destination.

The first stop for visitors to Bright should be the Visitor Information Centre where, while sitting on a balcony overlooking the Ovens River, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and browse through some of the great information brochures available.

The Great Alpine Road passes through the Ovens Valley and Bright before beginning its long upward journey to the High Plains. This view is near Freeburgh looking towards Mounts Feathertop and Hotham which rise to about 1800 metres above sea level.

The Great Alpine Road continues over Hotham Heights to Omeo, passing Dinner Plain and Victoria Falls along the way. It then proceeds through the Tambo Valley to Bairnsdale.

The Ovens River flows through the town of Bright presenting lots of recreational and relaxation opportunities for both local residents and tourists. On a warm summer's day, you will find the river banks and pools a hive of activity. This popular pool is at the junction of Morse's Creek with the Ovens River, behind the Information Centre and near a giant water slide.

Travel Tip

Only a 20-minute drive from Bright is the cute little alpine village of Harrietville on the upper reaches of the Ovens River. The pace of life is a lot slower in Harrietville and this will soon become apparent to the visitor who lingers a while.

Harrietville has a rich gold-mining heritage, which is reflected in the old cottages and information displays scattered around the town. The road to Harrietville is a pleasant, easy and level drive along the Ovens Valley with some wonderful scenery.

Beyond Harrietville the road begins to climb steeply as at twists and winds its way up to the High Plains at Hotham Heights. So if you don't want the stress of mountain driving, make Harrietville your turn-around destination. Have a coffee and a relaxing walk around the riverside park before returning to Bright.
