Bright

A town for the great outdoors

Bright Outdoor Centre is the place in Bright for the adventurous. There you will find all the camping, fishing and bushwalking gear you will need plus a great range of local topographic and touring maps and books.

The potential for outdoor activities around Bright is almost limitless. The town is surrounded by some of Victoria's best and highest mountain peaks, ideal for long or short bushwalks, four-wheel driving and camping. During winter the peaks and high plains are covered in a thick blanket of snow, making Bright, as a base for exploring the skifields, one of Australia's premier winter destinations.

This is Mount Feathertop, Victoria's second highest peak and a favourite destination for experienced hikers and cross-country skiers.

Another reason to visit Bright is for the fishing. There are many mountain streams, just like this one, flowing freely down from the High Country including the Ovens, Buckland, Kiewa and Buffalo Rivers plus many great little creeks.

If your enjoyment comes from four-wheel driving , then Bright has plenty to offer. There are some great bush driving opportunities into the mountains which surround the Ovens Valley.

Travel Tip

If you don't mind a rough gravel road, and you are coming from Melbourne to Bright, try the Mansfield to Whitfield to Myrtleford Route via Tolmie, Powers Lookout, Cheshunt, Rose River and Dandongadale. There is about 25 kilometres of rough gravel road to negotiate but the experience will be well worthwhile. The are was ravaged by wildfire in the 2006 / 2007 summer season but the greenery was already fighting back within a month after the fires.
