BOURKE

Out the back of NSW

Bourke, situated on the Darling River, was once an outpost of civilisation. The river provided the town with an important transport link as the town became an inland port for paddle-steamers. The problem was that the river often dried up rendering this means of transport virtually useless for long periods of time.

Today a weir helps to keep the 'Jandra' afloat so that visitors can experience what it was once like to travel by river boat.

Bourke is still an important rural town and has a good variety of accommodation and stores. Randall's Newsagency carries good maps of Outback New South Wales.

The old North Bourke Bridge across the Darling River is now disused but it is still a famous landmark of the town.

A walk across the old bridge will be rewarded with good views of the river and the bridge itself.

May's Bend, on the Darling River upstream from Bourke, is a popular recreation venue and picnic area.
For those interested in history, there is plenty to see in and around Bourke including Major Mitchell's Fort Bourke Stockade, built to protect the early explorers from a native threat.

Today's stockade is a recreation of the original stockade.
