Bonnie Doon township is situated beside the Brankeet Creek Arm of Lake Eildon. When water levels in the lake are medium to high, all types of water based sports are popular. This picture shows a houseboat not far from the highway bridge.
An old railway bridge across Brankeet Arm has been converted to a 'Rail Trail' for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

One of the many old gold diggings at Tallangallook in the Strathbogie Ranges not far from Bonnie Doon. Tallangallook was a township around the turn of the 19th century. Now it is an abandoned historic area surrounded by state forest. Access is best suited to 4WD vehicles. Ask at the Bonnie Doon Motor Inn for directions and a map.

Travel Tip

If you have a few moments to spare at Bonnie Doon, locate the rail trail car park on the Bonnie Doon township side of the bridge and walk on to the rail trail. The trail leads to the old railway bridge pictured above.

Another interesting spot is the site of Old Bonnie Doon township. During construction of Lake Eildon, the township of Bonnie Doon was relocated to its current higher and drier position. Signs from Maroondah Highway lead to the old township monument.
