Benambra

Fertile grazing country, ghost towns, remote river valleys and an occasional lake.

The quiet little village store at Benambra on the shores of the intermittent Lake Omeo, offers travellers and campers refreshments, food, essential provisions, and a good selection of maps for exploring the north-east forests.

A full lake is scarce these days, but if you happen to be lucky enough to encounter a scene such as this, enjoy it while you can. (Photo taken circa 1980s)

Taylor's Crossing Benambra is ideally situated to explore the vast and remote forests of North-east Victoria. Rivers near Benambra include the Mitta Mitta, Gibbo, Dart and Murray plus numerous beautiful mountain creeks. Taylor's Crossing on the Mitta Mitta where the Australian Alps Walking Track crosses the river via an impressive swing bridge.
Sassafras was once a small mining centre on a tributary of the Gibbo River. All that remains to evidence the site is a cemetery, monument and the old diggings. Even with a good map it's hard to find the site off the Benambra to Corryong Road.

Follow the road through the Gibbo River valley, climbing out of the valley towards Benambra until a saddle is reached. A small and narrow 4WD track leads right (north-east) for about a kilometre to the site.

Gibbo Flat, beside the Benambra to Corryong Road  is a great spot to stop for a picnic or overnight camp. The site is a former farming property with old fruit and nut trees and a homestead ruin. If you are in luck, you may be able to rent a small cabin (centre of picture), situated right beside the river; however, prior arrangements will usually be required.
Dartmouth Dam offers quiet backwaters for some great fishing. If you have a lightweight boat, you may be able to find a launch site on the Mitta Mitta or Gibbo Arm; however, a 4WD is necessary and there are no boat ramps. Local knowledge or information will be very useful.
