The towns of Barham in New South Wales & Koondrook in Victoria are separated only by the Murray River. The source for local information, attractions and places to stay is the Golden Rivers Tourism Information Centre at Barham.

Within an easy drive from Barham or Koondrook are the magnificent Red Gum forests of the Murray River where picnics, camping, fishing, birdwatching can all be enjoyed in a relaxing atmosphere.

The wetlands of Gunbower Island and Kerang Lakes are a birdwatcher's paradise. Wetland cruises operate through the state forest while at Kerang some excellent bird observation areas have been developed. This photo was taken just after sunrise on a cold, but sunny winter's morning with mist rising from a lagoon. Actual colours. Original colours. Photo has not been touched or enhanced in any way.

Once a month the Golden Rivers District comes alive with the sounds and sights of a bustling market at Murrabit, a small hamlet on the Murray just 20 minutes from Barham. The market has a great following with stallholders coming from far and wide to ply their trade in a day of frenzied trading. Having come so far, the traders are often in a good frame of mind to negotiate a bargain. For more details contact the Tourism Information Centre at Barham.
The Barham community, assisted by Club Barham, has developed a fantastic lakes precinct with lawned picnic areas, walking tracks, wetlands, bridges and scenic lookouts.

If you need a place to stay, contact the Accommodation Booking Agency at the Information Centre.

Travel Tip

If you like exploring the Murray River forests try the river road on to Gunbower Island between Koondrook and Cohuna. This bush track hugs the river closely and passes several good picnic spots but don't attempt it when it is wet. The road (or track) is definitely dry weather only.
