Bairnsdale has one of the most beautiful main streetscapes of any rural town in Australia. The Princes Highway passes through the main shopping area where the road has been divided by a wide nature strip of parks, gardens, rest facilities, and some interesting structures. With easy parking on either side of each divided lane, the town centre is a great place for travellers to stop. There are public conveniences and lots of great shops to browse through including Stow's Newsagency where you can pick up a map. Bairnsdale is also a great place to stay for a while to explore the Gippsland Lakes and River systems. If you are into fishing, ask Trevor at Stow's for some local information. As a keen fisherman, he is happy to take a phone call or an email on the subject. |

One place the staff at Stow's may suggest is a good spot for fishing is the Mitchell River where you will nearly always see keen anglers trying their luck, and who wouldn't want to spend a while in scenery such as this at Eagle Point about 11 kilometres south of Bairnsdale. |

Another beautiful river feeding the Gippsland Lakes is the Nicholson River, about 11 kilometres east of Bairnsdale towards Lakes Entrance. An old railway bridge across the Nicholson has been converted to accommodate walkers, bicycle riders and horse riders following the East Gippsland Rail Trail between Bairnsdale and Nowa Nowa. The rail bridge pictured here is about 500 metres walk from the Princes Highway bridge or a longer, but pleasant, walk from Bairnsdale along the rail trail. |
| According
to Stow's, one special place not to be missed when visiting Bairnsdale is
St. Mary's Church in the main street.
The interior of the church features a large and beautifully hand-painted mural. |
