Bairnsdale At one end of the Great Alpine Road |
Bairnsdale Camping and Outdoors is conveniently situated in the heart of Bairnsdale at 220 Main Street (Princes Highway). They stock a great range of outdoor and camping gear plus a good selection of maps and books for the local area and will be happy to assist visitors to find that perfect getaway place near Bairnsdale. Shown below are a few Bairnsdale & District temptations to get you going. |
| Wattle Point, off the Bengworden Road, south-west of Bairnsdale is a lovely spot to visit for a picnic and a relaxing time beside the Gippsland Lakes. Here you can sit back, enjoy the outdoors and watch the passing procession of small craft travelling between Loch Sport, Hollands Landing and Paynesville. There is a good picnic area with toilets at the point. |

A more
adventurous destination is the old Glenaladale Weir on the Mitchell River. While the Mitchell remains one of Victoria's largest undammed streams, there have been several attempts to tame it. This weir was constructed circa 1920s. Promptly after its completion a large flood came down the river and split the newly constructed wall. You will need a 4WD vehicle, a canoe or fit feet to visit the weir; plus a good map. The staff at Bairnsdale Camping and Outdoors will help you find your way to it. |
To the north of Bairnsdale
are several old gold mining areas including Bullumwaal, Deptford and
Melwood. Bullumwaal once had several thousand residents with an impressive main street lined with all sorts of commercial business houses. Now there are only a dozen or so private dwellings and an old hall. There is an information board and picnic area at the hall, so if you are looking for somewhere different to go, and don't mind a gravel road, visit Bullumwaal. Cross the Mitchell River via the bridge at Wy Yung, then continue along the Bullumwaal Road for about 30 kilometres until the hall is reached. |
