ARB Bairnsdale

Start your 4WD experience at Auto Improvements. Call in to for a 4WD map or guidebook, then head off along the Dargo Road.

Auto Improvements (ARB) is situated on the Princes Highway at the western entrance to Bairnsdale. The bright yellow showroom is unmistakable on your right when coming from Melbourne, Sale or Stratford, just past the Dargo turnoff. They have a good range of 4WD accessories and maps.

Bairnsdale is fortunate in having some of Victoria's finest four-wheel drive country at it's doorstep. Anyone who loves driving through the bush or into mountainous terrain should head for Dargo, about 1.5 hours distant from Bairnsdale. Around Dargo, there is a wealth of 4WD and bush driving options.

This view shows the nature of the country around Dargo. The view is of the Wonnangatta River Valley at Waterford taken from one of the many 4WD tracks in the area. (Unfortunately, this track has recently been closed, however there are many more opportunities for similar scenery from other tracks).

Easily accessible along a gravel bush road, suitable for soft roaders and most 2WD vehicles is the lookout at Billy Goat Bluff over The Amphitheatre in Mitchell River National Park.

Travel Tip

Catch up with a legend at Dargo

Local businesses at Dargo are keen to promote the district to four-wheel drivers. For some real mountain hospitality call in at the hotel for a meal or refreshments, or have a coffee and snack on the verandah of the general store.

Either way there is a good chance of meeting one of Dargo's legendary mountain cattlemen.
