Bairnsdale On the Magnificent Mitchell River |
Aussie Disposals in the main street of Bairnsdale has an excellent range of camping gear, clothing and footwear. They also have a well-stocked map and book stand with lots of local titles.
Within easy walking distance from the main street is The Mitchell River. Continue walking along the riverside paths to enjoy some of the great scenery. |
| There are five bridges over the Mitchell River between its origin at the confluence of the Dargo and Wonnangatta Rivers, and Bairnsdale. This is Wuk Wuk Bridge near Lindenow. Beside the bridge is a spacious reserve suitable for fishing or having a picnic. |

Apart from the Mitchell River, Bairnsdale is in close proximity to some of the best places on the Gippsland Lakes such as Paynesville. Here a yacht passes through McMillan's Strait between Paynesville and Raymond Island. |
| If you think the scenery at Bairnsdale is something to drive a long way to see, try the upper reaches of the river. This is at Lambert's Flat, Glenaladale, about 1 kilometre above the 'Final Fling Rapids' - a favourite area for canoeists. |

Travel Tip |
| The Final Fling is a place to head for if you think you have seen everything else around Bairnsdale. Take the Dargo Road through the picturesque Lindenow country until you reach 'The Fingerboards' junction. (Fernbank & Princes Highway to the left and Glenaladale to the right). Turn right towards Glenaladale. Proceed past the hall and towards the river. Before reaching the river, you should see Alexander & Findlay's Road on your left. Follow this road through a gate and into the Final Fling Reserve. You can enjoy the rapids and/or go for a stroll along the riverside track, with some stunning cliffs above to Lamberts Flat at the above view. | |
