ARKAROOLA WILDERNESS SANCTUARY An Amazing Landscape |
|
|
Arkaroola in the Northern Flinders Ranges is set deep within an ancient landscape of rugged peaks and valleys. The property was a run down former sheep station when Reg & Griselda Sprigg purchased it in the late 1960s. Reg was a keen geologist who saw potential in the landscape as an environmental destination for the public. They transformed it into the Arkaroola -Wilderness Sanctuary. The sanctuary and resort development is still owned and operated by the Sprigg family. Ph: 08 8648 4848 www.arkaroola.com.au |

Arkaroola includes a store, service station, accommodation and motel units, restaurant, caravan / camping park, information centre and an observatory for studying the sky. Visitors are encouraged to follow the any of the vast network of walking or vehicle trails to some very special and interesting places within the Sanctuary. 4WD tours or scenic flights can also be arranged. This view of Arkaroola is from Griselda Hill at dusk.

There are seemingly endless craggy peaks and mountain ranges surrounding Arkaroola, ideal for exploring by four-wheel drive or on foot. This scene is of the Gammon Ranges from the Arkaroola to Yudnamutana Road. At Yudnamutana, near some stunningly coloured cliffs are the remains of an early copper mining settlement with mining relics and a small cemetery. |

Sillers Lookout should be a highlight of anyone visiting Arkaroola. Special 4WD tour vehicles take visitors to the very top of this unbelievable peak. The tiny object on the summit in this photo is one of those tour vehicles. |
| Evidence of early mining in this part of the Flinders Ranges are scattered about Arkaroola and the Gammon Ranges. This old building was used as a smelter at Bolla Bollana, near the boundary of the Gammon Ranges National Park and Arkaroola. |

Yudnamutana is one of our favourite places of
the entire Flinders Ranges. The colours of the clff faces are awe-inspiring.
To give measure to the cliffs in this scene, notice the person standing to
the right of the vehicle below the white gum tree. A visit to Yudnamutana is
a memorable day trip from Arkaroola. Set up base at Arkaroola Village and follow the four-wheel drive track via Bolla Bollan and Umberatana to the site of the former mining settlement of Yudnamutana. A sketch map and notes may be available at the Arkaroola Visitors Centre. Much of the land you pass through on this trip is private station land. Do not venture off the main thoroughfare leading to Yudnamutana. Overnight camping is not permitted. |
