This book is an illustrated field guide to the freshwater fishes of far north-eastern Queensland, an area extending north of the coastal town of Cardwell, and covering the coastal strip and Cape York peninsula. It provides useful information on the biology and ecology of freshwater fishes found in the area, as well as fishing and handling techniques, venomous fish and the treatment of fish stings.

The main part of the book deals with the identification of the freshwater fishes, with photographs of most species from the region. Information on the habits, habitat preferences, and perceived aquarium, food and sport value of each species is also included.
