Deep within the forests of East Gippsland is the historic and cosy Bellbird Hotel. The hotel is situated in a well-manicured garden setting beside Bellbird Creek. Being on the Princes Highway, it is an ideal place to stop for a meal, light refreshments or an overnight stay. There is even a playground for the kids. The sign on the side of the hut says 'Boat Hire' but don't worry, the boat in the foreground is not what you get. Instead you will be provided with a modern motor boat, ideal for exploring the quiet waterways of Mallacoota Inlet. The lush green river flats of the Cann Valley contrast with the distant blue mountains. The small cross roads village of Cann River is centrally situated to take advantage of some of Gippsland's prime natural tourist destinations including Point Hicks, Mallacoota and the forested hinterland.
For a beautiful scenic drive follow the Monaro Highway through the Cann valley to the New South Wales border.
The beaches of Cape Conran are more often than not as lonely and quiet as this scene depicts. The view is from the Yeerung River mouth towards the cape. This is a great spot for walking, relaxing or exploring rockpools. An excellent walking track heads up and around the East Cape to the west side. The Princes Highway once passed right through the township of genoa; however, with construction of a new road bridge, the highway now bypasses the town centre by a mere 300 metres; however, this diversion has been enough to cause closure of a service station and general store. The only remaining business premises is the Genoa Hotel. It provides home cooked meals, accommodation and tourist information.
Take a few moments to call in to the hotel and obtain some information on the district's attractions, then visit the old highway bridge and tourist display beside the Genoa River. Lake Tyers is the most easterly lake of the Gippsland Lakes; however it is an isolated estuary and not connected to the main lakes. There is good access onto the broad expanse of Ninety Mile Beach at the estuary mouth. As the mouth is usually closed, there is ample scope for beach walking in both directions. Mallacoota is one of the best camping destinations in Australia with beautifully grassed camping areas on the inlet foreshore. Boats can be moored alongside your campsite. There is also easy access to the surf beach. get up early and view the spectacular Mallacoota sunrise from the camping area foreshore. This picture was taken beside campers tents and caravans. The historic Norinbee state school is only a few kilometres from Cann River along the Monaro Highway. The school, originally built in 1898, has been moved three times before being restored in 1993. It is now classified by the National Trust. An old and abandoned railway traverses the green Snowy River flats between Newmerella and Orbost. To the right of the picture is the Princes Highway and to the left is the historic trestle bridge of the Bairnsdale to Orbost railway. Its easy to find your very own fishing spot in East Gippsland. This is at the Yeerung River mouth, near Cape Conran.
