Yerranderie By Jim Barrett |

Story of a Ghost Town Less than one hundred kilometres from the General Post Office in Sydney lies a relic of pioneering Australia — the one time silver-lead mining town of Yerranderie. Situated in the southern Blue Mountains and isolated by the sprawling tentacles of Lake Burragorang, its sixty hectic years between the 1890s and the 1950s contrast strongly with its sleepy lot today. But to the curious visitor Yerranderie is willing to give up its secrets, secrets of a Victorian / Edwardian era which was compounded by the strictures of a severely isolated community. Yerranderie has a fascination for the young who learn of their ancestors' history; from the land forms they can see a geological progression; they can be encouraged to climb the Peak, bushwalk the mountains and enjoy the environment of the local mountain flora and numerous wild animals who are tame enough to come close to the visitor. This is a gracious, unhurried, old world place. It is set in an unspoiled world of high sandstone mesas and deep, deep valleys. It is a combination that can do nothing else but charm the visitor who will just let it all sink in. |
