Volume 1

Volume one introduces us to the absorbing history of the opening up of the Tasmania's South West in the early part of the 1800s.Early explorers came both by sea and trekking overland to this remote area. They were intrepid and determined adventurers who would discover the unique beauty and treasure of this isolated and wild region. The reader will go with them as they explore from Macquarie Harbour and the upper reaches of the Gordon River down to the south coast and Port Davey.

Read extracts from the diaries from these resolute men men such as James Calder and Alexander McKay, Francis McPartlan, James Sprent and Charles Gould. These glimpses of their experiences give us a feeling for what it was really like to survey and chart this new landscape, leaving us with a deep sense of respect for these men and what they achieved, despite all the suffering and privation they endure to venture into the unknown.

Volume 2

This fascinating account of pioneering endeavour continues here in volume two. Following the earlier survey work done in the Tasmania's South West, the reader will gain insight into the lives of the Piners in their search for new stands of Huon Pine and mineral prospectors searching to find that one valuable claim that surely must be out there. This introduces us to men and woman with such hardy families as the Longleys and the Judds, who played an important part in the development of this area in the second half of the nineteenth century.

New tracks were made and opened up as the attempt was made to make a way through to the South West Coast and the Macquarie Harbour. It was a race against time if Tasmania was not to lose out to mainland interest from Victoria, who were on the point of taking control of this area. A railway was even considered, receiving some enthusiastic support. But in the end the Tasmanian government was not persuaded to take up this idea, so instead of electric trains humming across this beautiful part of our state, today it still remains what it always was, pristine wilderness.
