| Shack Country and the
Old Burragorang By Jim Barrett |
![]() |
Early days in the Burragorang Valley For some 130 years, between the eighteen twenties and nineteen fifties, the Burragorang Valley lay in idyllic solitude, virtually on the outskirts of Sydney. To all intents and purposes, the Warragamba scheme sounded the death knell of what was one of the most beautiful pockets of wild Australia. Part One of this book is a story of a chance remnant of the Burragorang scene, of the building of a shack in the "backyard" of The Burragorang — on Scott's Main Range. It was erected in 1940, by five priests from the Archdiocese of Sydney, as a "retreat" from their parochial duties. The incident in itself is not eventful. Two happenings, however, combined to raise a routine event to one of historical value and considerable human interest . .. first, the flooding of the Burragorang which seemed to spell the demise of Kiaramba, and secondly, the emergence of the Catholic Bushwalking Club, which gave it new life. Part Two is a nostalgic look back on the Old Burragorang. |
