THE HISTORIC TAMAR VALLEY

by J.G. Branagan

Its People, Places & Shipping 1798 - 1990

Jack Branagan, of vintage 1908, has spent most of his life in the Tamar Valley, and with a background of insurance management, farming, bushwalking and exploring, plus the gift of patience and an untiring love of research, there could be none better able to commit it all to paper.

The foundation for this work is his own comprehensive notes, put together over several decades during the preparation of four other historical books with a relationship to the Tamar Valley. Because of his own friendly attitudes towards people as such, a considerable amount of this historic book is wrapped up in his accounts of the families and personalities who spent their lives in the Tamar Valley.

Of importance was the famous waterway itself, fully recognised by Jack Branagan by his complete and accurate recording of its shipping and the port developments of the last half century when it became necessary to realign the channel and move the shipping birth from Launceston down to the lower reaches.

Branagans Historic Tamar Valley is so encompassing in its purpose that it will probably be quoted, as a well earned authority, on its subject in the years to come.
