| Cox's River By Jim Barrett |
![]() |
Discovery, History, Development In the process of researching Shack Country and the Old Burragorang which was published in 1990, the author came across much interesting information about Cox's River and the Kowmung River and realised that a need existed to put this information together in separate manuscripts. Research has been as painstaking as possible, but memories, impressions and interpretations are all subject to normal human fallibilities, and therefore errors, inadequacies and obvious omissions may well have crept into this modest opus. This comment is especially valid with respect to the journeys of Sir John Jamison and Thomas Jones which are discussed in Chapters Four and Five. The incompleteness of the original documents can give rise to contrary interpretations. There was very little knowledge of the Aborigines who inhabited the Cox's River system, but for many reasons it was considered important that some picture be drawn of the indigenous society which had put its stamp on the southern Blue Mountains. One of the most meaningful aspects of the Aboriginal story has been an attempt to reconstruct a map of the trails that they used within the Cox basin and those that took them into their neighbours' territories. |
