People planning travels or answering questions about Australia's topography and specific features will find it a little easier to locate what they are looking for in the future.

Instead of spreading large sheets of paper across the kitchen table or lounge room floor, maps are now available on an easy to access DVD containing the largest scale continent-wide topographic map series ever produced in Australia.

The DVD contains Australia's complete list of published 1:100 000 topographic map series and is a digital copy of the printed maps produced by Geoscience Australia and the Department of Defence over the past 35 years.

All infrastructure, drainage systems, vegetation, cultural, contour and annotation features on the paper maps have been captured, joined together and geo-referenced to be presented on the DVD as a mosaic in the Enhanced Compression Wavelet (ECW) viewing format.

To achieve full national coverage, the new DVD includes scans of printed 1:250 000 topographic maps to cover sections in which 1:100 000 maps are unavailable.
